Beautiful Indonesia: Every Color of the Rainbow

This is the Mantis Shrimp that lives on the Liberty Wreck not only has every color of the rainbow coved in his little crustatious body, but he also packs a serious punch! Check out this National Geographic Video to see the power this little guys holds.

Beautiful Indonesia: Nudibranch, Tauntingly Tiny!

This is a Nudibranch, a very colorful and tiny little slug like sea creature. People, especially photographers often go crazy over spotting these little guys as they are so small and hidden on the reef. Some are also quite rare! I spend about 15 minutes getting the perfect shot of this guy on the Wreck of the Liberty in Tulamben near Amed.

Beautiful Indonesia: Nestled in the Anemonies

Anemone fish (Nemo's cousin) have a special relationship with their name sake creature, the Sea Anemone. While the Sea Anemone is poisonous, the Anemone Fish has a tolerance to this poison and uses this poisonous protection as its safe home. I love how this guys so nestled in, makes me want to join him, order takeaway and watch a movie he looks so cozy!

There is so much detail and macro to be seen on the Liberty Wreck in Tulamben near Amed. You just have to have patience, dive slowly and observantly and there is a whole unseen world that will be revealed!

Beautiful Indonesia: Art in the Shadows

Underwater photography is a whole different game when it comes to land based vs underwater photography. The use of natural light underwater can be so tricky due to the low light conditions and the constant movement of the fishy subjects, but can make some very dramatic effects. The use of flash on the other hand is also tricky in that all the settings have to be right, the lights positioned carefully, and again those fast swimming fishy subject matter that always seem to get away just as you are finally ready to take your shot!

The wreck of the USS Liberty, in a town called Tulamben near Amed, starts in very shallow waters and does not go terribly deep so it is a great spot for beginner divers, free divers, photographers and divers of all levels.

Yoga in Bali: The Human Body, The Scenery and The Serenity

In recent years Bali has evolved into a thriving center for yoga. From seasoned yogies and beautiful yoga studios with killer views, to the fresh faced yoga instructors that have just completed their teacher training course, there is a perfect place for every yogi who visits and lives in Bali.

My good friend Andy became a Yoga instructor recently and what a great time to celebrate that killer toned body and her newly perfected postures with a photoshoot with Heather Holt Photography Bali! We had a beautiful backdrop in the Canggu rice fields, a stunning evening with a gorgeous sunset.

Some of my personal favorite places to practice in the Canggu area are:

Many of these places offer a variety of daily yoga classes, teacher trainings, accommodation, and some even have healthy cafes attached, perfect for a post practice snack or juice.

With a place as scenic as Bali, it is hard to not take advantage of the natural beauty and agriculture here. The rice paddies of Bali are some of the most beautiful on earth sprawling all over the island. They have even been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Beautiful Indonesia: Sunset & Fishing Boats, Amed

Amed is a sleepy black sand beach town in Northeast Bali. The draw for tourists is mainly diving, but if you fancy a super quiet chilled out getaway this is your spot and it is not to be underestimated. The beach, town and surrounding area is bustling with locals enjoying the perks of their beach town, a short drive outside of town provides a stunning vista of the ocean and mountains, the ever present view of the volcano that watches over the little village is ever changing with the movement of the sun and stars, and of course the warm clear waters that contain some of the most interesting underwater life I have ever seen, but more to come on that later!
